A Twist in the Tale

My main problem when writing is to find an original twist for the tale.  Not for every tale - they don't all need one as we all know - but sometimes that little zesty twist is really needed to give the story some zing.

I don't know whether I have a lazy brain or am just plain unimaginative, but I have to say I find it really hard to dredge up something unexpected from the sludgy depths of the stagnant canal that my mind often turns into when faced with this...

I'd be really grateful for any tips, please!

I don't often write twist-in-the-tail endings, but whenever I have, the twist has been the spur for writing, rather than something that is added in at a later stage. I hope that makes sense - I was hoping an example would come to me, but it hasn't!

I'm with Annalisa. The few twists I've used have always come first. I've had to build a story round them :-)

I tend to read a lot of books and watch an awful lot of TV Dramas. I've found since I started writing, that I actually watch them in an entirely different way. Watching the plotlines etc. It's a great excuse for sitting and watching the TV as well. It's research!

I think that coming up with a twist to a story is SO HARD! I always wait until I can think of a cool twist, then build the story around that. I'm not saying it's the best way, but it does seem to work for me.
